Anselm KieferThe language of material

Afbeelding
PRESENTATION By Efi Michalarou*) EXODUS at Gagosian at Marciano Art Foundation in Los Angeles The language of material plays an essential role in the work of Anselm Kiefer, most of whose pictures have a geological sedimentary texture. For the past forty years, his work has been developing in a process of accumulation, mingling and reworking of themes, motifs and constellations which recur and overlap repeatedly in diverse media. Highly symbolic connections emerge from lead, concrete, dried plants, glass, barbed wire and other heterogeneous materials. Courtesy the artist and Gagosian. In Exodus at Gagosian at Marciano Art Foundation in Los Angeles , Kiefer rewrites memory by “cross-mapping” collective histories layered with literary strata from Paul Celan to E. T. A. Hoffmann. While Exodus recalls the story of the Israelites departure from Egypt in the Old Testament, works in the exhibition are bloodstained from human genocide. Kiefer’s ability to obscure such gravity with a promise of divine or cosmological intervention pronounces a powerful bifurcation between eschatology and genesis, and between the experience of void and weight. As he states ...

Anselm Kiefer The Terror of History, the Temptation of Myth

Bovenaan: Anselm Kiefer. More than any other recent painter's work, Anselm Kiefer's painterly post-painterly project has called forth ruminations about national identity. American critics in particular have gone to great length in praising his Germanness, the authentic ways in which he deals in his painting with the ghosts of the fatherland, especially with the terror of recent German history. The use of profound allegory, the multiple references to Germanic myth, the play with the archetypal, all of this is held to be typically Ger...
